ZULOAGA AND FALLA, THE STORY OF A FRIENDSHIP, attempts to narrate the personal relationship that existed between the two, renown, early 20th century artists, who managed to maintain a close friendship on practically familiar terms, while inspiring others with their shared artistic projects, they philanthropic activities and their cultural enterprises in general. This was all forged thanks to an in-depth conceptual reflection that had its roots in the regenerative spirit that took hold in Spain during a time in which the country strived to leave behind the pessimism derived from the events of 1898 and aimed at becoming a great cultural power, on the basis of its traditions and past successes, that would place the country, once again, on the international scene.
The exhibition revolves around a series of crucial milestones during this friendship—one we know a lot about nowadays thanks to the wealth of letters they exchanged—along a chronological line regarding the common issues that enabled their personal and artistic growth.
It all began with the premiere of Manuel de Falla’s La vida breve in Nice in 1913, with Zuloaga’s inestimable help in the production of the costumes and scenery. That event was the international presentation of the great musician from Cadiz and was the beginning of a friendship that would last until the end of their lives.
